Media Justice is at the center of a social, economic, environmental and health justice agenda that seeks to redress inequalities of power, voice and knowledge in the popular, mainstream media. Media Justice in various settings is a frame for advocacy and direct action shaped by a race, class, gender and power analysis.
In 1966, a landmark civil rights case established that television stations must serve the needs of their entire viewing audiences and that citizens have the right to demand representation from both broadcasters and federal regulators. It is in the spirit of that case from Jackson, Mississippi, that the Media Justice Fund seeks to support efforts for access, opportunity, literacy and control of media resources in the service of social justice and human rights.
What is the Media Justice Fund?
An increasingly corporate-biased media undermines the American people’s economic, social and cultural well-being. Worse still, most Americans have lacked access to open, vigorous public debates that could lead them to take direct action. As a result, many Americans, particularly those in marginalized communities that are most affected by a biased media, have simply ”tuned out,” rather than face the great difficulty of disentangling concepts of an unjust media from the complex systems and policy considerations that govern telecommunications.
Drawing on a civil rights legacy, activists are working hard to reclaim control of the media as a public resource and an essential tool in the fight for social justice. The Media Justice Fund of the Funding Exchange (MJF) is working with activists in marginalized communities to support their efforts and develop the American people’s ability to understand the ways they can effect change in the media they consume.
